Woman Dies After Visiting Boyfriend in Abuja, Police Launch Manhunt

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has commenced an investigation into the sudden death of a 27-year-old woman, Miss Esther Akwaji, who reportedly fell ill during a visit to her boyfriend in the Dei-Dei area of Abuja.

According to the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the incident was reported on January 22, 2026, at about 11:00 a.m., following a distress call from the deceased’s brother, Mr. Peter Akwaji.

He told the police that his sister left home on January 21 at about 3:00 p.m., claiming she was going to a bank in Dei-Dei, but failed to return. Later that night, at about 10:30 p.m., he received a phone call from a man who identified himself as Esther’s boyfriend.

The caller stated that Esther had visited him at his residence, where he bought food for her. Shortly after eating, she reportedly began vomiting. She was said to have been rushed to Kubwa General Hospital, where she was confirmed dead while receiving medical attention.

Following the report, police operatives from the Dei-Dei ‘A’ Division proceeded to the hospital, where the deceased’s body was recovered and deposited at the mortuary for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

SP Adeh disclosed that discreet investigations are ongoing, adding that efforts are being intensified to locate and apprehend the boyfriend, who is currently at large.

The FCT Police Command assured members of the public of a thorough investigation and reiterated its commitment to ensuring that anyone found culpable is brought to justice. Further updates, the command said, will be made available as the investigation progresses.
