We Deserve Our Pay’ — Senate Fires Back at Nigerians Demanding Pay Cut

The Nigerian Senate has again responded to those clamouring for a pay-cut for the lawmakers.

Ugamatv recalls that a demand for the reduction of the salaries and allowances of the lawmakers has remained in the front-burner.

Many Nigerians believe they are collecting a jumbo package, even amid worsening hardship in the country.

Some have also suggested that they should operate on a part-time basis.

But speaking while appearing on Channels Television, Senate Spokesman, Yemi Adaramodu, has rejected such a proposal.

He said the lawmakers pay is justifiable.

“We go home almost every time and we are the ones when they give birth to a new baby, they ask for naming ceremony funds. When they are building a new house, it is from us they ask for assistance.

“So, if the parliament was not there, who do you expect that our constituents would run to?

“If we are on part-time, can’t the same amount of money be paid to part-time legislators?” He asked.

He also rejected calls for a part-time legislator, arguing that it would lead to a shutdown of democracy.

“If the parliament is on part-time, then it means democracy is on part-time,” he said, adding that “There is no democracy that derides its parliament and thrives.”
