Vice President Kashim Shettima, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has paid a condolence visit to the family of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari in London, following his death in a UK hospital on Sunday, July 13.
The visit was confirmed in a statement issued on Monday by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President).
Arriving in the British capital on Monday morning, Vice President Shettima met with members of the bereaved Buhari family to convey President Tinubu’s heartfelt condolences and express solidarity during their time of grief.
As part of the visit, Shettima also called on Malam Mamman Daura—a close confidant and nephew of the late President—who is currently recovering in a London hospital.
The Vice President led a high-powered presidential delegation to oversee arrangements for the formal repatriation of Buhari’s remains to Nigeria. He is expected to accompany the body back home once all procedures and documentation are completed.
Other members of the delegation include the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar; and Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia.
The passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari has triggered a nationwide and international outpouring of tributes, with many praising his legacy of military discipline, leadership, and national service. President Tinubu had earlier announced the late leader’s death and ordered that national flags be flown at half-mast as a mark of respect for his enduring contributions to Nigeria’s history.
