US govt sues Harvard over treatment of Jewish and Israeli students, seeks billions

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against Harvard University over alleged failure to protect Jewish and Israeli students, seeking to recover billions of dollars in taxpayer funds.

In a complaint filed in a federal court in Boston, the U.S. Department of Justice accused Harvard of being deliberately indifferent to hostility on campus and of failing to enforce its rules when the victims are Jewish or Israeli.

The complaint stated that this conduct sent a message to affected students that they were being intentionally excluded and denied equal access to educational opportunities.

Harvard did not immediately respond to the lawsuit.

The legal action comes less than two months after the administration sought a financial settlement from the university over its policies, with earlier reports indicating a demand that had reached as high as $1 billion.

It also follows a separate lawsuit filed in February in which the government accused Harvard of failing to comply with a federal investigation and sought documents related to whether the university considered race in its admissions process.
