Three teachers of the University of Nigeria Secondary School, Nsukka, including Mr. Lawrence Oko, popularly known as “Uncle Law,” and Hon. Chinedu Ezenwa, were reportedly detained and questioned by security personnel of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) over an alleged political meeting involving members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The incident reportedly occurred on June 15, 2026, shortly after PDP campaign officials concluded an engagement in Nsukka ahead of the June 20 Enugu North Senatorial District by-election.
According to sources, the PDP senatorial candidate, Dr. Nestor Ezeme, attended the meeting alongside Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, who is said to be positioning for the 2027 Enugu State governorship race.
Sources within the university community alleged that the institution’s management was opposed to the political gathering being held within the university environment.
Witnesses claimed that shortly after the PDP campaign team departed the venue, university security personnel arrived and began efforts to identify individuals believed to have organised the meeting. Mr. Oko, a Civic Education teacher at the secondary school, was subsequently taken into custody by the security unit.
It was further gathered that the teacher was asked to write a statement during his detention, although details of the statement could not be independently verified.
The incident has generated reactions among staff members, some of whom questioned the basis for the arrest, noting that politicians from different parties had previously visited sections of the university community without similar actions being taken.
There were also unverified claims that one of the security operatives referred to Chief Uche Nnaji as “an enemy of the university” during the operation.
Meanwhile, another staff member, Hon. Chinedu Ezenwa, was reportedly invited by the university’s security department on June 16 to provide information regarding the circumstances surrounding the invitation extended to Dr. Ezeme and members of his campaign team.
Sources familiar with the development maintained that the meeting was held outside the premises of the University of Nigeria Secondary School and that approval had allegedly been secured from the appropriate authorities before the event took place.
Further allegations suggest that some university security personnel had been assigned to monitor the movements of Chief Nnaji and the PDP candidate, with plans to detain them without involving the police.
However, police sources claimed that detectives attached to the Nsukka Area Command became aware of the alleged plan and moved to arrest some of the university security personnel believed to be involved.
According to the sources, the security operatives reportedly avoided arrest by remaining within the university campus while efforts were initiated by university authorities to address the matter with the police.
The incident has prompted calls from members of the university community for a thorough investigation into the actions of the security personnel involved. Some stakeholders have also demanded the immediate release of the detained teacher if no wrongdoing is established against him.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the management of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka nor the university’s security department had issued an official statement regarding the incident.
