The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has announced the recruitment of 401 new staff members as part of efforts to strengthen its workforce and enhance healthcare service delivery.
The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, made this known while commemorating her first 180 days in office. She explained that although she assumed duty six months ago, nationwide industrial actions by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) and the Joint Health Workers Union (JOHESU) significantly affected operations, leaving her with just two active months of administration.
Despite the setbacks, Ize-Iyamu said the management team achieved notable progress through strategic planning, discipline, and the unwavering commitment of staff members who remained focused despite temporary challenges.
She revealed that she inherited a N7 billion debt burden from her predecessor, a situation that nearly hampered the hospital’s operations. However, under her leadership and through the UBTH-CARES initiative, the institution has experienced significant revitalization.
According to her, the hospital has sustained lifesaving interventions through free and subsidized services, including cancer treatment, emergency caesarean sections, and dialysis support. These efforts align with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda for Health championed by President Bola Tinubu.
The CMD further disclosed the establishment of an Indigent Patients Fund aimed at assisting vulnerable patients in accessing essential medical services. She noted that the hospital is actively engaging partners and donors to expand the reach and impact of the initiative.
Expressing appreciation to Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, for pledging N2.5 billion towards the construction of an ultra-modern paediatric complex, she described the commitment as unprecedented and highly commendable.
Calling on well-meaning Nigerians to support the institution, Ize-Iyamu emphasized that government alone cannot shoulder the responsibility of sustaining quality healthcare services.
She reaffirmed that UBTH is no longer merely managing challenges but is steadily advancing, improving patient care, medical training, and institutional standards. Each milestone achieved, she added, reflects the hospital’s dedication to excellence and service to humanity.
