Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reacted to the recent attack on former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, and other leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Edo State, stating that experiences of insecurity and disorder are not unfamiliar to him.
Obi explained that persistent violence and instability in Anambra State previously motivated him to contest for governor, as he believed the government at the time needed to restore public trust, security, and order.
Reflecting on the recent incident at the ADC secretariat in Benin, Obi said the growing wave of lawlessness across Nigeria should inspire well-meaning citizens to act responsibly rather than retreat in fear. Quoting the ancient philosopher Plato, he noted that good people who refuse to participate in governance risk being ruled by bad leaders.
He expressed appreciation to Nigerians at home and abroad for their prayers and solidarity following the attack. Obi also extended support to Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, a former governor of Edo State, and Professor Oserheimen Osunbor, acknowledging their contributions to national service.
The incident reportedly occurred when Olumide Akpata was formally received into the ADC. Dr. Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, alleged that Obi and ADC leaders were attacked by armed individuals who allegedly fired shots and damaged vehicles, describing the incident as a threat to democracy.
The attack heightened political tensions in the state, especially following earlier remarks by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, who had previously stated that Obi’s visits to the state should be coordinated with his office for security reasons.
However, the Edo State Government has denied any involvement, dismissing claims of targeted attacks as unfounded and politically motivated. In a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, the administration insisted that no directive was given to target any political group.
Reports further indicated that the disruption may have stemmed from internal disagreements within a faction of the ADC allegedly led by former Senate Chief Whip Roland Owie, who was said to have been excluded from a meeting at Odigie-Oyegun’s residence.
Obi concluded by urging Nigerians not to lose hope but to remain steadfast in electing leaders defined by competence, character, and compassion, emphasizing that unity and courage remain essential to building a peaceful and prosperous nation.
