UK Establishes Office to Assist Citizens Detained Abroad

The United Kingdom is strengthening measures to support British nationals detained abroad, particularly those facing the most challenging situations or trials.

The government on Tuesday announced the appointment of former Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt as the UK’s first-ever Envoy for Complex Consular Detentions.

The office was established to provide additional assistance in complicated cases, including those involving concerns about welfare, due process, or human rights.

London says the ex-minister will ensure that complex matters continue to receive priority attention, supporting the UK’s efforts to secure progress on legal issues.

Burt was selected based on his track record in handling intricate consular cum diplomatic cases, high-pressure environments, and liaison with international counterparts and detainees’ families.

The official will advocate on behalf of British nationals and will work closely with families to ensure their views are heard and reflected in the UK’s approach.

Burt has a mandate to support coordination across government, push for resolutions in arduous cases, and ensure that every possible avenue is pursued.

The envoy will also aid the FCDO’s consular work by issuing emergency travel documents, offering counsel and help to those arrested abroad, and providing current travel advice.
Speaking on the new role, Burt noted that his experience of how complex cases affect households would help him “secure the best possible outcomes” for Brits detained overseas and their families.
