European football’s governing body, UEFA, has issued a provisional suspension to Gianluca Prestianni ahead of SL Benfica’s Champions League play-off second leg against Real Madrid CF, following allegations that he directed racist language at Vinícius Júnior.
The controversy arose during the first leg in Lisbon on February 17, which Real Madrid won 1–0. Tensions escalated after Vinícius scored, with the Brazilian forward accusing Prestianni of making a racial slur. The referee subsequently triggered UEFA’s anti-racism protocol, temporarily halting the match while the matter was addressed.
In an official statement, UEFA revealed that its Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector had filed an interim report. Based on this, the Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body imposed a one-match provisional suspension on Prestianni for an alleged violation related to discriminatory conduct. UEFA emphasised that the sanction is temporary and subject to the findings of a comprehensive investigation.
Prestianni has denied using racist language. While reports suggest he acknowledged making an offensive comment, he maintains that it was not racially motivated. Benfica have thrown their support behind the midfielder and are reportedly preparing a formal defence as proceedings continue.
The incident has once again highlighted the persistent issue of racism in European football, especially considering Vinícius’ previous experiences with abuse in Spain. After the match, the Real Madrid star took to social media, describing racists as “cowards,” a message that resonated widely among supporters and anti-racism campaigners.
For Benfica, the suspension presents a major challenge ahead of the crucial return fixture. For UEFA, the final ruling will be closely scrutinised as a reflection of the sport’s commitment to tackling racism at the highest level.
