The Kaduna State Government has allocated new plots of land to residents of Malali Low-Cost Kaduna whose homes were demolished during the administration of Nasir El-Rufai.
Presenting the land titles to beneficiaries, the Director General of the Kaduna Geographic Information Service, Bashir Garba Ibrahim, said the move fulfils a commitment made by Governor Uba Sani to address the grievances of those affected.
He explained that the allocation followed a stakeholders’ meeting held on January 21, which reviewed the circumstances surrounding the demolition carried out by the previous administration. Ibrahim urged the beneficiaries to develop their new plots promptly and advised against selling them, stressing the government’s intention to help them become homeowners and contribute to the state’s development.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mohammed Auwal expressed appreciation to the governor for intervening after years of uncertainty. He recounted the residents’ nine-year struggle for compensation and also commended KADGIS for facilitating the process.
Other affected residents praised the governor’s response, describing it as compassionate and responsive to the needs of the people.
The issue dates back to October 2020, when the Kaduna State Development and Property Company issued a seven-day eviction notice to residents of the area. Following protests, the decision was temporarily halted, but in March 2021, a fresh three-day notice was served, leading to the demolition of more than 80 structures.
Since then, displaced residents have continued to engage with the state government, seeking either compensation or alternative housing—demands that have now begun to receive attention through the new land allocations.
