United Bank for Africa (UBA) has dismissed as false and malicious a viral social media report claiming that its Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, has divorced his wife, describing the allegation as completely fabricated and aimed at tarnishing his image.
In an official statement issued by the bank, UBA described the publication and related online content as baseless, reckless, and deliberately crafted to mislead the public.
The statement, signed by the Group Head of Brand, Marketing and Corporate Communication, Alero Ladipo, revealed that the matter has been reported to security agencies, who have already begun investigations. UBA disclosed that three individuals allegedly connected to the creation and spread of the false report have been arrested, while investigations continue and may lead to more arrests.
The bank also issued a cease-and-desist warning to individuals and platforms circulating the report, demanding the immediate removal of the content and urging them to stop further dissemination.
UBA warned that anyone found responsible for originating or amplifying the false claims could face legal action, including defamation suits, claims for damages, and other penalties under the law.
Reaffirming its stance, the bank said it remains committed to protecting the reputation and privacy of its chairman, adding that it will pursue every legal option—both civil and criminal—to ensure those behind the misinformation are held accountable.
