Two men tragically lost their lives after falling into a latrine pit in Bazabe Quarters, Albasu Local Government Area of Kano State. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, June 21, was confirmed by the Kano State Fire Service in a statement released on Sunday, June 22.
According to Assistant Chief Fire Officer and Public Relations Officer, Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the Takai Fire Station received a distress call at about 11:16 a.m. from Inspector Auwalu, reporting the emergency.
Upon arrival, rescue personnel discovered that the first victim, 40-year-old Usman Muhammad, had entered the pit to retrieve his mobile phone—commonly referred to as Indon Kauye—which had accidentally fallen in.
Muhammad became trapped and was unable to get out. A second man, also about 40 years old, identified as Ibrahim Inuwa, entered the pit in a rescue attempt. He managed to secure a rope around Muhammad in preparation for extraction but lost consciousness inside the pit before he could be pulled out.
“Both men were retrieved from the pit unconscious and were later confirmed dead,” the statement read.
Their bodies were handed over to SP Kabiru Magawata, the Divisional Police Officer of Albasu LGA, for further investigation.
The State Fire Service has urged the public to avoid entering dangerous environments and to always seek professional assistance during emergencies.
