Two Cows Dead, Car Shredded as Fallen Power Line Sparks Blaze – TCN Urges Public Safety Compliance

The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, has reported that a heavy thunderstorm on the night of September 3, 2025, led to the collapse of the 132kV Otukpo–Nsukka–New Haven transmission line.

According to the company, the downed conductor landed close to Tower 97 along the line route. While there were no human casualties, the incident triggered a high-voltage spark that destroyed a residential building erected beneath the line, gutted a car parked within the Right of Way, and killed two cows grazing nearby.

Following the incident, the Regional Manager of TCN, Enugu Region, Engr Tom Inugonum, visited the affected site with his team to carry out a physical inspection. In response, the company’s Quick Response Line Maintenance crew has already begun dismantling the damaged section in readiness for restringing new conductors.

Despite the damage, electricity supply to the Nsukka axis was not disrupted. TCN explained that bulk power is currently being routed through the Otukpo 132kV Transmission Substation to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, to ensure continuous supply.

The company expressed relief that no lives were lost, stressing that the event underscores the grave danger of encroaching on transmission line corridors.

“This serves as a stark reminder of the critical need to avoid building, parking, or engaging in any activities within the transmission lines’ Right of Way,” TCN stated.

The company further appealed to the public to observe all safety regulations around power facilities. It reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property while ensuring the stability of the national grid.
