U.S. President Donald Trump has extended his congratulations to Pope Leo XIV, the newly elected head of the Catholic Church and the first American-born pontiff in history.
UGAMA TV earlier reported the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as Pope, marked by the traditional white smoke rising above the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. The 69-year-old Chicago native now assumes the papacy as Pope Leo XIV.
Reacting to the historic moment, President Trump took to his official Facebook page, expressing enthusiasm and national pride.
“Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope,” Trump wrote. “It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment.”
The President’s remarks reflect widespread celebration among Americans following the unprecedented elevation of one of their own to the highest office in the Catholic Church.
