Trump Administration Escalates Pressure on Tehran Over Crackdown on Protesters

United States Department of the Treasury has sanctioned several Iranian security officials, including Ali Larijani, the Secretary of the Supreme Council for National Security (SCNS).

Also designated are 18 individuals and entities tied to Iran’s “shadow banking” networks, accused of laundering proceeds from Iranian petroleum and petrochemical sales.

The action further implements National Security Presidential Memorandum-2 of 2025, according to a State Department readout on Thursday.

America slammed Iran’s ruling system for responding with “violence and cruel repression” against the “brave” civilians who are fighting for their basic rights.

The U.S. says it “stands with the Iranian people,” noting that “the regime continues to fund destabilizing activities around the world” rather than invest in its citizens’ welfare.

Also on Thursday, the White House said Tehran halted 800 executions that were scheduled to take place on Wednesday after President Donald Trump’s admonition.

The President and his team are closely monitoring the situation, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt hinted, adding that “all options remain on the table.”

“The President received a message that the killing and the executions will stop. If the killing continues, there will be grave consequences,” the spokesperson warned.

Leavitt confirmed President Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s communication when asked about Netanyahu’s advice that the U.S. delay a military action in Iran, as reported by the New York Times.

Iranian Prince Reza Pahlavi, meanwhile, believes the Islamic Republic’s leadership may collapse soon. The violent crackdown is a “last-gasp effort to intimidate,” he said in an interview with The Economist.
