In a landmark step set to redefine the transportation experience in Enugu State, Governor Peter Mbah, on Thursday, commissioned five ultramodern bus terminals, rolled out 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) mass transit buses, and launched the Enugu State Modern Transport Management System, alongside over 80 newly constructed bus shelters.
The commissioning ceremony, which drew massive crowds across different locations, showcased the governor’s Integrated Transport Infrastructure Projects – Phase 1, designed to create a seamless, multimodal transportation network and drive Enugu’s economic expansion from $4.4 billion to $30 billion.
The five terminals – Holy Ghost Terminal 1 (Inter-State Hub), Holy Ghost Terminal 2 (Inter-City Hub), Nsukka Central Station, Abakpa Nike Central Station, and Gariki Central Station – boast world-class facilities including food courts, banking halls, motels, shops, CNG refilling stations, and cinemas. A 400-metre sky bridge – the longest in Nigeria – connects the two Holy Ghost terminals.
Governor Mbah described the transformation as a crucial milestone in tackling traffic congestion, improving commuter comfort, and positioning Enugu as a model of modern governance.
“This is more than a ribbon-cutting ceremony – it is a new chapter for over seven million residents of Enugu State,” Mbah declared. “We are building a world-class transport system that connects people, powers businesses, and sets Enugu on a path of sustainable growth.”
He emphasized that the new e-ticketing system would ensure transparency, eliminate corruption, and offer passengers seamless travel across multiple routes, while a comprehensive insurance scheme will protect both commuters and assets.
In his remarks, the CEO of Planet Project Construction Company, Mr. Biodun Otunola, described the simultaneous construction of five transport terminals as “unprecedented in Nigeria’s history.”
Similarly, representatives from the Presidential Initiative on CNG praised the project as a forward-thinking leap towards cleaner, safer, and more affordable public transportation.
The initiative is expected to generate over 20,000 jobs across Bus Rapid Transit operations, hybrid taxis, airport services, ride-hailing, and related support services, further boosting the state’s economy.
Community leaders, local government chairmen, and traditional rulers hailed the development as a catalyst for economic revival and urban transformation.
With this historic rollout, Enugu State takes a decisive step towards its vision of becoming Nigeria’s most livable city – one bus, one terminal, and one innovation at a time.
