SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA — Sunday, 14 December 2025 — At least 12 people have been killed and dozens more wounded after two gunmen opened fire during a Jewish celebration at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach, authorities confirmed. The attack occurred late Sunday afternoon at a “Chanukah by the Sea” Hanukkah event near a playground and park area where families and children had gathered for the first night of the holiday.
Police and emergency services were called to the scene around 6:47 p.m. local time after reports of multiple gunshots. Law enforcement engaged the suspects; one of the gunmen was killed on site, and the second was taken into custody in critical condition. Investigators are also examining nearby suspected improvised explosive devices.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said the incident has been classified as a terrorist attack targeting Sydney’s Jewish community, noting the event was deliberately targeted in what officials described as an antisemitic act of violence.
At least 29 people were injured, including two police officers and children, and are being treated at hospitals across the city. Witnesses described scenes of chaos and panic as attendees and beachgoers fled the area, seeking shelter amid the sound of sustained gunfire.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the violence as “beyond comprehension,” saying it had “shattered what should have been a night of peace and celebration.” Australian authorities have urged the public to avoid the Bondi area while the investigation continues.
The attack is the deadliest shooting in Australia in nearly three decades, triggering shock both domestically and internationally, with global leaders expressing solidarity with victims and condemnation of the violence.
