Enugu State has been thrown into mourning following a fatal road accident at Ndiagbo Junction that claimed the lives of at least five people and left many others injured on Friday evening, September 12, 2025.
According to eyewitness accounts, the tragic incident occurred between 5 and 6 p.m. as a bus conveying mourners—mostly indigenes of Obeagu Town in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State—was returning from a burial ceremony in Abia State. An eyewitness, who was in the ill-fated bus but miraculously unharmed, told a Ugamatv reporter that the bus collided head-on with a Civil Defence vehicle allegedly driving against traffic at high speed.
The impact was devastating, resulting in the instant death of five passengers and leaving several others with varying degrees of injuries. Survivors have since been rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention, while the remains of the deceased have been deposited at a morgue.
The Obeagu community is in shock as families and friends grapple with the painful loss of their loved ones. For many, the tragedy is even more heartbreaking because it could have been avoided. Questions are being raised about the growing culture of recklessness on Nigerian roads, where disregard for traffic laws continues to cut short innocent lives.
This tragedy is not only a painful loss for Obeagu indigenes but also a wake-up call for urgent government intervention. Authorities must hold those responsible accountable and strengthen road safety enforcement to prevent further bloodshed. Civil and security agencies must also lead by example, ensuring that those tasked with protecting lives do not endanger them through recklessness driving.
As Enugu mourns, the call is loud and clear: this must not be allowed to happen again.
