President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially renamed the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, in honour of Nigeria’s late former President.
The announcement was made on Thursday during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) session dedicated to paying tribute to the late statesman. The news was confirmed by presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, in a brief statement shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.
“President Tinubu renames University of Maiduguri as MUHAMMADU Buhari University. President Tinubu announced the honour at the session of tributes of the Federal Executive Council to his late predecessor,” Onanuga wrote.
The renaming comes as part of ongoing national tributes to commemorate the life and leadership of Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away recently. The decision reflects the Tinubu administration’s intent to preserve Buhari’s legacy, particularly in northern Nigeria where the former president enjoyed strong support.
The change is expected to take immediate effect, pending formal procedures by the Ministry of Education and relevant authorities.
