The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, has revealed that President Bola Tinubu has given a firm directive to prevent strikes in public tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Alausa emphasized the administration’s commitment to averting industrial actions in the education sector. “The President has directed that not again in this country will ASUU or tertiary institution trade unions go on strike,” he said.
According to the minister, the government is engaging regularly with key unions, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).
He stressed that the Tinubu administration is fulfilling its obligations to these unions, unlike previous governments that often failed to honor agreements. “It is not just about promises—there has to be consistent relationship building. These are very reasonable people. What was missing before was government commitment,” he noted.
Alausa also used the platform to address ongoing debates surrounding age requirements for admission into secondary schools and universities.
