The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has never directed him to lie, manipulate narratives, or harass any journalist over critical reporting.
Idris made the remark on Wednesday in Abuja while receiving a delegation from the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), led by its General Secretary, Mr. Onuoha Ukeh, and Deputy President, Mr. Sebastian Abu.
He said that despite occasional negative press and allegations of defamation from some quarters, President Tinubu has remained committed to democratic principles and the rule of law.
“There are times when the media instigate tension,” the minister said, “but President Tinubu has never urged me to alter narratives, tell lies, arrest, or harass any journalist or individual. He is a true democrat who respects the rule of law.”
Idris emphasized the administration’s media-friendly posture, noting that the government views the media as a critical partner in national development.
“The Federal Government understands that it cannot operate effectively without the media, which is the fourth estate of the realm. We’ve had situations where some individuals went overboard, but instead of confrontation, I have consistently engaged relevant bodies like the NUJ, NGE, and the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria to address the issues,” he said.
He called for balanced and constructive criticism, urging the press to acknowledge the government’s efforts when due while offering honest feedback when necessary.
“When we do good, praise us. When we fall short, tell us constructively so we can improve,” he appealed.
Highlighting the administration’s commitment to media development, the Minister revealed that Nigeria is nearing final ratification to host a UNESCO-backed Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Centre at the National Open University in Abuja.
“This is a significant achievement. Once ratified, the MIL Centre will attract global stakeholders to Nigeria and play a vital role in enhancing media literacy, combating fake news, and curbing misinformation and disinformation,” Idris said.
He urged the media not to generalize isolated incidents as government hostility toward press freedom, reiterating Tinubu’s unwavering support for a free and responsible press.
