“The ‘Olodo Uprising’ was fathered by weaponised ignorance, not by one person” — Dele Farotimi weighs in on Ycee’s comments

Human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi has shared his thoughts on the ongoing debate surrounding rapper Ycee’s “Olodo Uprising” comment, arguing that the problem is far deeper than any individual.

Speaking in a recent video, Farotimi said what Ycee described as the “Olodo Uprising” is merely the end result of a problem that has been developing for decades.

According to him, he first wrote about what he called “weaponised ignorance” in 1994, describing it as a deliberate system used by the Nigerian state to keep citizens uninformed, which eventually led to widespread poverty and the decline of critical thinking.

He argued that what Nigerians are witnessing today is the product of years of elevating ignorance, adding that many people now reject verifiable facts simply because they conflict with their ethnic, religious or political beliefs.

Farotimi concluded that while many are focused on the so-called “Olodo Uprising,” the real issue is the “weaponised ignorance” that gave birth to it.
