A teacher, who also serves as the headmaster, sustained injuries when a dilapidated classroom building partially collapsed at Community Primary School, Oyorokoto, in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.

 

The incident occurred on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, while the headmaster was in class, teaching.

 

According to eyewitnesses, a section of the building suddenly caved in, triggering panic among staff and pupils. Fortunately, no students were injured, but the headmaster was hurt during the collapse.

 

Residents say the building had been in a state of disrepair for a long time, yet classes continued due to a lack of alternative classrooms and the teachers’ commitment to providing basic education in the riverine community.

 

“The injured teacher, like others in the school, remained dedicated to ensuring learning continued despite the obvious risks,” one community member noted.

 

 

 

The incident has sparked outrage and concern among residents, who are now calling on the Rivers State Government and relevant education authorities to urgently renovate the school and prevent a more tragic occurrence in the future.

 

“We are pleading with the government to come to our aid. This school is the only hope for many children here,” a parent said.

 

 

 

As of the time of this report, the injured teacher is receiving medical attention, while the affected structure remains unsafe for use.
