Suspected ‘bike thief’ escapes lynching in Akure

A man accused of theft narrowly escaped being lynched after he was apprehended by vigilant youths and residents in the Oke Aro axis of Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The incident occurred at about 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 19, 2025, near Adu Memorial Secondary School, where a woman accused the suspect of snatching her motorcycle.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the alarm raised by the victim drew the attention of residents, particularly youths in the vicinity, who quickly mobilised and pursued the suspect.

He was eventually apprehended at Gaga, a neighbouring community within Oke Aro.

Upon his arrest, the suspect was shielded from a potential mob attack and immediately handed over to officers of the B Division Police Station in Oke Aro for further interrogation and investigation.

The development has sparked fresh concerns among residents, who lamented the rising spate of thefts in the area, especially involving motorcycles and generators.
