Super Eagles can still qualify for 2026 World Cup— Mikel Obi

Former Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi, remains confident that the Nigerian national team can still secure a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite their current standing in the qualifying group.

The Super Eagles are preparing for a crucial final stretch in their qualification campaign. They will first face the Crocodiless of Lesotho this Friday in a Matchday 9 encounter at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. Following that, they will wrap up the campaign next Tuesday with an away game against the Cheetahs of Benin Republic.

Currently, the West African side occupies third position in Group C with 11 points from eight games. Nigeria must win their remaining two fixtures to stand any realistic chance of qualifying for the global tournament.

Speaking on the ObiOne Podcast, Mikel stressed the gravity of the situation, stating that failure to qualify would be unforgivable for the football-loving nation.

“It’s going to be a crime, an absolute crime, if Nigeria doesn’t make it to the World Cup again,” Mikel said. “We love our football too much. Our World Cup fate is in the players’ hands. They have to win these two games—no excuses.”

Mikel also challenged the players to put aside any external issues and focus solely on delivering the necessary results for the country.

“At this stage, every off-field problem goes out the window. It’s about the players now,” he added. “They must take responsibility and deliver. Nigerians are counting on them.”

The former midfielder’s message is clear: the Super Eagles must fight hard to secure positive results in their final two qualification games.
