South-East Boxing Booms: Three Regional Titles Claimed at Rumble in Enugu

Three boxers claimed regional titles at the Rumble in Enugu Boxing Championship held on Tuesday at PPSMB Parliament Hall, with the event marking another successful outing for boxing in the South-East.

In the South Eastern Nigeria Boxing Championship, Chibuike Okoronkwo, also known as The King Priest, won the Featherweight title, Israel Ogbodu, alias Izzy Money, took the Super Featherweight title, and Chinaza Okoronkwo claimed the Lightweight title.

The regional titles involve Enugu State, Abia State, Imo State, Anambra State and Ebonyi State, collectively known as the South Eastern Region of Nigeria.

In the Olympic-style boxing results, Jude Ugwuanyi stopped John Wisdom in round two, while Shedrack Ozoemena, also known as De Bull Nwa Nike, defeated Chinedu Marvellous, alias Steel Bender, by points decision.

The event was organised by former Nigerian international amateur boxer Ikechukwu Okoronkwo through Ikeuj Boxing Promotion, with the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control providing sanctioning.

President of NBBofC, Dr Rafiu Oladipo, the Secretary General, Remi Aboderin, and other board members were in Enugu for the professional boxing event.

Speaking on the fights, Oladipo said it was part of the sanctioning body’s plan to take professional boxing to all parts of the country.

This is part of our plan to take professional boxing to all the nooks and crannies of the country,” he said.

“You’re aware that since the present board assumed office, we’ve been organising fights on a regular basis, which has enabled some of the country’s boxers to be ranked by the various continental and world boxing bodies, and we’ll continue to take the sport to many parts of the country.”

Aboderin, who also doubles as President of the West African Boxing Union, expressed confidence that the fight would open the floodgates for more professional fights not only in Enugu State but the whole South-East.

“The South-East region has produced many talented boxers for the country over the years, and we believe this event will inspire more young talents to take up the sport professionally,” Aboderin said.

Promoter Okoronkwo explained that he was promoting the fights to give talented boxers in the state the opportunity to showcase their talents and become future world champions.

He commended the NBBofC for sanctioning the fights, noting that this was just the beginning of more professional fights to be staged in the South-East.

Ikeuj Boxing Promotion plans to organise more events, including a potential title defence in Arochukwu, Aba or Umuahia, Abia State
