Showering daily ages your skin – Dermatologists claim

Dermatologists are advising older adults to adopt a gentler bathing routine, warning that frequent showers and excessive use of soap can contribute to dry, irritated and fragile skin as people age.

According to skin specialists, aging causes several changes that make the skin more vulnerable, including reduced production of natural oils, thinning of the outer skin layer, loss of elasticity and slower cell renewal. These changes weaken the skin’s protective barrier, making it more prone to dryness, itching and irritation.

Dr. Sylvie Meaume, a dermatologist and head of the Geriatric Wounds and Healing Unit at AP-HP Rothschild Hospital, said older adults are more likely to experience tight, dry and itchy skin because of these natural changes. She explained that the skin’s hydrolipidic film, which helps retain moisture and protect against irritants, becomes less effective with age, and frequent or harsh washing can further damage this protective barrier.

Experts recommend that adults aged 65 and above shower about twice a week, while rinsing the body daily if necessary. Soap should be used approximately every third day rather than during every wash, with particular attention still given each day to cleaning areas such as the underarms, feet and intimate regions.

To minimise skin damage, specialists advise using lukewarm rather than hot water, limiting showers to three or four minutes, and choosing gentle cleansing products such as shower oils, lipid-rich soaps or dermatological cleansing bars instead of harsh soaps containing strong detergents.

After bathing, older adults are encouraged to gently pat their skin dry with a towel rather than rubbing vigorously, which can further irritate delicate skin. Dermatologists stress that reducing shower frequency does not mean neglecting personal hygiene. Instead, they say tailoring bathing habits to the needs of aging skin can help prevent excessive dryness, eczema, irritation and other skin conditions while maintaining good hygiene and long-term skin health.
