Senegalese fans launch a crowdfunding campaign to help pay coach Pape Thiaw’s $100,000 fine after the AFCON final

Senegalese football fans have rallied in solidarity to launch a crowdfunding campaign aimed at helping head coach Pape Thiaw pay a fine imposed on him following the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.

The initiative, which quickly gained traction on social media, was started by supporters who felt the sanction against Thiaw was unfair and wanted to show appreciation for his role in Senegal’s AFCON campaign. Fans described the coach as a symbol of national pride and commitment, insisting he should not bear the financial burden alone.

Pape Thiaw was banned for five Confederation of African Football (CAF) matches and handed a $100,000 fine after a chaotic Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final against Morocco this month.

The Senegal Football Federation (FSF) was fined a total of $615,000 for various offences during the final.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) was fined $200,000 for the “inappropriate behaviour of the stadium ball boys”.

An additional fine of $100,000 was imposed for the “improper conduct” of players and technical staff who invaded the VAR review area and obstructed the work of the Congolese referee.

There was also a $15,000 fine after Moroccan supporters used lasers to try and distract Senegalese players, bringing the total to $315,000.

While the fine sparked debate among football stakeholders, many Senegalese supporters viewed his conduct as a passionate defence of his team rather than a punishable offence.

Within hours of the campaign going public, fans at home and in the diaspora began contributing, sharing donation links and messages of support online. Several supporters noted that the fundraiser was less about the money and more about sending a strong message of unity and support for the coach.
