Senator insists on proper border management as FG plans reopening

The Senator representing Ogun West Senatorial District, Tolu Odebiyi, has reiterated the need to reform the nation’s border for effective management, as the Federal Government plans to open up the country soon.

The nation’s land borders have been closed since August 2019.

The Senator, who has been advocating proper reform in the management of borders, told our correspondent on Friday that the country had not really achieved much progress in that regard, despite the long closure.

Odebiyi, who sponsored a bill to establish the Nigeria Institute for Border Studies at Imeko, Ogun State, said the current border enforcement policies had increased infringement on due process.

He also said the development had affected the rights of some Nigerians and caused unnecessary crises in communities, leaving people around the border areas feeling frustrated.

He said, “There is the need for more strategic, modern and technologically driven border control measures.

“The genuine businesses along the border areas are really suffering as a result of the stringent border closure.

“The new plan of the Federal Government to reopen the land borders would lessen the economic downturn that the nation is grappling with today.”
