The Senate on Wednesday approved the appointment of Hon. Justice Salisu Abdullahi as the Acting Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory High Court.

The decision followed the consideration of the report of the screening carried out by the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters.

The Chairman of the Senate panel, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, who presented the report, explained that the panel did not receive any objection to the confirmation of the nominee.

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, called for a division after the consideration of the report and the majority of the senators supported Abdullahi’s confirmation.

The request for his confirmation was contained in a letter read on the floor during plenary by Lawan on Tuesday.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had said the request was made pursuant to Section 256 subsection 1 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

Abdullahi became the acting Chief Judge following the retirement of his predecessor, Hon. Justice Ishaq Usman Bello, who attained the mandatory retirement age of 65 years on January 5, 2021,

Abdullahi, being the most senior Judge on the Bench of the High Court of the FCT, was appointed as the acting Chief Judge of the Court on January 6, 2021, before his eventual nomination by Buhari.
