Segun Sowunmi, former spokesman to ex-Presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has said he would only support President Bola Tinubu in 2027 if he formally defects to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Tuesday evening, Sowunmi hinted at a likely exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he has been a long-standing member for nearly three decades.
“If I’m going to support Tinubu in 2027, by God and everything that is in me, I will leave and join his party,” he declared. “I don’t believe in the nonsense of staying in one party while supporting someone else. I don’t have time for pretence.”
Sowunmi emphasized his loyalty to party ideals and criticized those who engage in political double-dealing. “I’ve been in the PDP for 28 years — many of the people there now don’t even have 28 days in the party. If I’m going to leave to support the President, I will openly say so.”
He also expressed frustration with the PDP’s internal issues and lack of reform, saying: “I’ve screamed and shouted that we needed to reform the party. Why would anyone with sense remain in a party that refuses to evolve?”
Citing political realities in his home state and among his ethnic group, Sowunmi admitted there is a “very strong possibility” he may defect. “Looking at what is going on in my environment, in my state, and in my tribe — I may likely leave,” he concluded.
