Security agencies partner monarchs, hoteliers to nab Anambra killers

In a bid to curtail the attacks in Anambra State ahead of the November 6 governorship poll, security agencies have deployed undercover intelligence officers in communities across the state and other parts of the South-East region.

The agencies are also collaborating with community leaders and hotel operators on intelligence gathering to foil further attacks and arrest the current bloodshed across the geo-political zone.

Members of the Indigenous People of Biafra had vowed not to allow the governorship election to hold just as armed men have been attacking and killing people.

The police had last week dispatched more operatives to the state while the Commissioner of Police was redeployed.

But speaking on the security measures being executed in Anambra in an interview with our correspondent on Monday, the Deputy Commandant-General, Operations, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Mohammed Haruna, disclosed that the service was mobilising sufficient personnel to the state for the poll.

He said, “Before this time, we have our intelligence officers on the ground who are feeding us with information on what is going on in that area. Secondly, no matter how segregated the community is, there must be elders and there must be people who are patriotic and willing to give correct intelligence. We are working with them to ensure that we have a hitch-free election.”

The DCG added, “The unknown gunmen are people who might be living in a community but the people don’t know them. And again, from our information, some of the people carrying out these attacks in Anambra might not necessarily be from that place. They could be infiltrators.

“We have a synergy with hotel operators but we are doing this in collaboration with the Departmrnt of State Services and the Nigeria Police. On our own, we are doing that also.”

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, has ordered the posting of Ben Nebolisa Okolo to Bayelsa State as the new Commissioner of Police in the state.

Okolo takes over from Mr Echeng Echeng earlier posted to Anambra State Police Command, according to a statement on Monday, by the Force spokesman, Frank Mba.
