Indian authorities have confirmed the recovery of the second black box from the Air India Boeing 787 that crashed in Ahmedabad last Thursday, claiming the lives of at least 279 people.
The cockpit voice recorder (CVR), which records sounds and conversations from the flight deck, was found by search teams, according to PK Mishra, a senior aide to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This follows the earlier recovery of the flight data recorder (FDR), which logs technical details about the aircraft’s operation, discovered a day after the crash.
The aircraft, en route to London, crashed shortly after takeoff, plummeting into a residential neighborhood in Ahmedabad. Out of 242 passengers and crew onboard, only one person survived. Additionally, at least 38 residents on the ground were reported dead due to the impact.
India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has launched a full-scale investigation. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is also involved in a parallel probe under international aviation protocols, given the American origin of the Boeing aircraft. Mishra confirmed that both the CVR and FDR have been successfully retrieved and secured.
