School fee hikes blamed on Nigeria’s economic crisis, says private school owner

Proprietor of Triumph and Peak International Academy, Enugu, Dr Gladys Ajaero, has lamented the current hardship in Nigeria.

Speaking in an interview on ‘Prime Time’, a programme on Arise Television, Ajaero said that the increase in school fees is caused by the state of the country’s economy.

She stated that proprietors are not to blame for the increment, saying it is not a way to extort parents.

The school owner also advised parents to take their children to schools they could afford.

“Private schools are actually a business venture. Everything you’re doing to make money definitely is a business and in business, you have standard.

“You may choose to put your child in a school where you can pay as much as one million naira, as much as N200,000 but you can still get a standard of N50,000, which is still standard. And of course, if you cannot afford that much, why go for it?

“The increase in school fees is caused by the economy of the country. You have so many bills also to pay. As a proprietor, you will pay your teachers.

“You will take care of the environment. You will take care of every other thing, non academic staff, cleaners and others,” she said.
