Rohr sweats over Osimhen fitness ahead Liberia, Cape Verde clashes

Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, has become a doubt for Nigeria’s 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Liberia and Cape Verde in November after picking up a muscle injury in training on Saturday.

The club has confirmed that the in-form striker will not be available for their Sunday (today) clash against Salernitana at the Arechi Stadium due to a muscle injury he picked up in training.

“Osimhen left the field prematurely with a muscle strain in his right gastrocnemius. Victor will not leave for the trip to Salerno,” the club said on its website.

Injury of the gastrocnemius is the most common form of calf strain and it typically takes one to three weeks to fully heal.

The 22-year-old is Rohr’s most trusted striker in the national team set up ahead of Paul Onuachu, Kelechi Iheanacho, Terem Moffi and Taiwo Awoniyi and he will be hoping to have him available for the clashes.

The Nigerian who joined the Italian side from Lille in the summer of 2020 has scored nine goals in 12 appearances for the club in all competitions with five of them coming in the Serie A in eight games.

Napoli have won nine matches so far and collected one draw against José Mourinho’s Roma at the Stadio Olimpico on Thursday, a result which put an end to their perfect streak.

Nigeria who are yet to book a spot in the playoff round of the African phase of the World Cup qualifiers will face Liberia on November 13 in Morocco before welcoming Cape Verde for their final Group C match.
