The Niger Delta Rights Advocates (NDRA) has commended a Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) officer, Ugochukwu Orji, for rejecting a N10 million bribe from a suspected ritualist, describing the act as a rare display of patriotism and integrity.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Bright Ngolo, the advocacy group said Orji’s exemplary conduct has reignited hope for a better Nigeria. NDRA has now called for his automatic promotion as a way of rewarding ethical behavior and inspiring similar actions among security personnel.
According to reports, Orji refused a bribe allegedly offered by Levi Onyeka Obu, a man on the run after human remains—including that of a pregnant woman—were discovered at his residence in Enugu State. Obu was intercepted while attempting to flee the country through a border point.
“The officer’s decision to act with honour, despite the temptation, is proof that Nigeria still has men and women committed to national interest above personal gain,” NDRA stated.
The group said promoting Orji would serve as a strong message to officers across all five paramilitary agencies under the Ministry of Interior, as well as other security institutions, that integrity is not only recognized but rewarded.
NDRA also applauded the Ministry of Interior for its efforts in enhancing border security through modern surveillance technologies, which it says are essential to curbing transnational crimes and protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
In addition, the group acknowledged the role of the Nigerian media in highlighting the officer’s patriotic act, encouraging continued focus on stories that reflect selfless service and ethical leadership.
“We believe that celebrating and rewarding individuals like Officer Orji is the path to building a new culture of accountability and national pride,” the statement added.
