Retired IGPs Visit Egbetokun, Pledge Support for Ongoing Police Reforms

The Committee of Retired Inspectors-General of Police has paid a solidarity visit to the incumbent Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, reaffirming unity and continuity within the Nigeria Police Force.

The meeting, held at the Louis Edet House, brought together former IGPs including Aliyu Attah, Sunday Ehindero, Mike Okiro, Ogbonna Onovo, Suleiman Abba, and M. D. Abubakar. Members of the Force Management Team, Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, Commissioners of Police, and other senior officers were also present.

Addressing the gathering, Egbetokun highlighted key reforms and milestones achieved over the past two years. These include the upgrade of the Intelligence Unit to a full department, elevation of the Legal and Medical Units to directorates, expansion of Police Mobile Force squadrons from 74 to 80, creation of additional Area Commands and Divisions, and the establishment of a Special Intervention Squad.

He also underscored the implementation of merit-based promotions, noting that over 141,000 officers have been elevated, alongside the introduction of mandatory ethics training aimed at enhancing professionalism within the Force.

Speaking on behalf of the retired IGPs, M. D. Abubakar commended the current leadership for its progress and urged the Inspector-General to maintain the reform momentum. He also encouraged officers and personnel to rally behind the IGP’s transformation agenda.

The visit reflected a spirit of intergenerational cooperation and a collective resolve to strengthen and modernise the Nigeria Police Force for improved public trust and operational effectiveness.
