Reckless driver crushes street sweeper to death in Lagos

An unidentified street sweeper was crushed to d3ath by a bus in an accident that occurred along Meiran Road, Lagos State.

The incident occurred on Saturday, December 20, 2025.

The driver of the bus attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by residents who witnessed the incident.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the d3ath in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq.

“The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) announces with profound grief a devastating and fatal road traffic incident that occurred earlier today along Meiran Road, inward the Iyana Ekoro axis of Lagos, resulting in the untimely d3ath of a female operative of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), who was conscientiously engaged in her lawful environmental sanitation duties,” the statement read.

“He said preliminary findings indicated that the fatal incident involved a blue Ford bus laden with bottled and canned beverages, with registration number BDG 495 YH, which was recklessly and unlawfully reversing on the expressway.

“In the course of this grossly negligent manoeuvre, the vehicle rammed into the unsuspecting LAWMA sweeper who was carrying out routine roadside cleaning. The severe impact proved instantly fatal.”

Adebayo added that LASTMA officers on active traffic surveillance around the Meiran axis swiftly mobilised to the scene upon receiving a distress report.

“It was discovered that the driver had absconded from the crash site in a desperate attempt to evade accountability. Demonstrating exceptional alertness and professionalism, the officers immediately pursued the fleeing vehicle, successfully apprehended the driver, and escorted him and the vehicle back to the scene,” he said.

The apprehended driver and the vehicle were subsequently handed over to officers of the Meiran Police Division for thorough investigation and prosecution in accordance with the law.

The timely intervention of security personnel averted a potential breach of public peace, as the suspect was on the verge of being subjected to mob action by angry residents.

The remains of the deceased were evacuated from the scene by LAWMA officials using an official LAWMA vehicle for further necessary procedures.

Meanwhile, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep anguish over the tragic and avoidable loss of life, describing the incident as both distressing and preventable.
