Police Deny Reports of IGP’s ‘Shoot-on-Sight’ Order in Benue

The Nigeria Police Force has denied reports claiming that Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, issued a “shoot-on-sight” order against anyone found carrying illegal firearms in Benue State.

Reports published on Friday alleged that the IGP made the directive during a stakeholders’ meeting in Makurdi. However, in a statement released on Saturday, the Force clarified that the claim was inaccurate.

According to the police, the IGP was referring to Force Order 237, which outlines the legal and operational guidelines for the use of firearms by police officers.

The statement, titled “Clarification: What the Inspector-General of Police Actually Said in Makurdi,” explained that officers have been briefed on the provisions of Force Order 237 and understand when it is lawful to use their weapons in line with the established Rules of Engagement.

The police added that the IGP emphasized that illegal possession of firearms and violent crimes would not be tolerated, urging the public to watch the full video of his remarks for proper context.
