Operatives of the Tactical Intelligence Response Squad (TIRS) of the Ondo State Police Command have arrested two suspected drug peddlers and recovered 51 bags of Indian hemp in Owo Local Government Area.
The suspects, identified as Usman Bashir (27) and Usman Muhammad (17), both from Kaduna State, were apprehended on Thursday near the Ikare Junction area while allegedly transporting the drugs concealed in large sacks.
Police spokesperson DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, who briefed journalists in Akure, said the arrests were made following credible intelligence received by the squad. He noted that the operation aligns with directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
Ayanlade added that the squad, working under the guidance of the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, conducted a thorough search that led to the discovery of 51 bags of cannabis, each weighing about nine kilograms.
He confirmed that the seized items have been documented as evidence, and the suspects are currently in police custody pending further investigation.
The police command praised the efforts of the operatives and urged members of the public to continue providing useful information to assist in the fight against crime.
It also reiterated its strong stance against drug trafficking and related offences, promising to release more details as investigations progress.
