Players protest against Gov. Akeredolu’s plans to privatise Sunshine Stars FC

On Tuesday, 30th March, 2021, Sunshine Stars FC players took to the streets in Akure in protest against plans by the Ondo State Governor to privatise the state-owned club.

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu had given the hint of the club’s privatisation on March 18, when he received the Forum of Elders in Sports in Ondo State in his office in Akure.

During the visit, Akeredolu said there was the need to chart a new course for the management of sports and football club ownership in the country.

He further said sports development was capital-intensive, noting that government could no longer manage clubs and sponsor sports effectively in view of the current financial challenges in the country.
