Plane makes emergency landing after 4 passengers suffer possible smoke inhalation

Four people reportedly suffered from smoke inhalation during a British Airways flight from Istanbul to London.

The plane, which was carrying 142 passengers, made an emergency landing at Bucharest Henri Coanda International Airport in Romania at 6:14 p.m. local time the airport said, per the Associated Press and ABC News.

Emergency and medical staff then reportedly boarded the plane.

British Airway’s flight status page showed that Flight BA603 was diverted to Bucharest.

“We’re very sorry, this flight scheduled from Istanbul to London, has been diverted to Bucharest,” they wrote to passengers.

While airport authorities told the AP that no one required medical attention, Romania’s Health Ministry said in a statement to the outlet that “the presence of smoke was confirmed” and passengers were evacuated from the plane.

“Four people are in poor health, possibly being smoke-intoxicated, and are receiving medical assistance on site,” the ministry told the outlet. However, they later added that the passengers “did not require medical care.”

In a statement to the AP, British Airways said they had not received any reports of smoke from the aircraft.

“The safety of our customers and colleagues is always our top priority, and our crew made the decision to divert as a precaution due to a suspected technical issue,” the airline said.

They continued, “The aircraft landed safely, customers disembarked normally, and we received no reports of smoke on board or hospitalisations.”

“We’re sorry to our customers for the disruption to their journeys and our teams are working to get them on their way again as quickly as possible,” the airline concluded.
