Phyllis George, female sportscasting pioneer, dies at 70

Lincoln Brown and Pamela Ashley Brown, the deceased’s children, announced their mother’s death in a joint statement.

“For many, Mom was known by her incredible accomplishments as the pioneering female sportscaster, 50th Miss America and first lady. But this was all before we were born and never how we viewed Mom,” they wrote.

“To us, she was the most incredible mother we could ever ask for, and it is all of the defining qualities the public never saw, especially against the winds of adversity, that symbolize how extraordinary she is more than anything else.

“The beauty so many recognized on the outside was a mere fraction of her internal beauty, only to be outdone by an unwavering spirit that allowed her to persevere against all the odds.”

Born on June 25, 1949, George began her career as a host for ‘Candid Camera’, an American reality TV series. In 1974, she started her foray into sports broadcasting as a sports producer for Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS).

She would later join the ‘The NFL Today’, the following year, co-hosting live pregame shows before National Football League games.

Her impressive stint in the sports broadcasting fetched her commendations from different quarters, with many describing her as a role model for women in a field hitherto considered exclusive for men.
