The Ward Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Obubra has announced the indefinite suspension of Hon. Ovat Agbor, the lawmaker representing Obubra I in the Cross River State House of Assembly.
In a strongly worded statement signed by Ward Chairman Stephen Ebokpo and Secretary Igirigiri Sam, the committee cited allegations of public assault involving the lawmaker’s wife, his repeated failure to respond to party invitations, and lack of engagement with party structures at both ward and constituency levels.
The letter, which was copied to party leaders at the local and state levels, as well as Governor Bassey Edet Otu and his wife, stated that the action was taken in line with relevant provisions of the APC Constitution.
According to the committee, the allegations—if proven—constitute serious misconduct and fall short of the ethical standards expected of a public office holder. It further noted that such actions could breach the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act as domesticated in Cross River State and may have damaged the image of the party and government.
The statement emphasized that the APC remains committed to discipline, accountability, and the rule of law, adding that it cannot condone behavior that undermines public confidence.
The suspension takes immediate effect, barring Agbor from all party activities pending the outcome of a full investigation. A disciplinary committee is expected to be set up to thoroughly examine the allegations.
The ward executives also accused the lawmaker of failing to actively participate in party meetings since assuming office, despite several invitations.
This development follows an earlier indefinite suspension of the lawmaker by the Cross River State House of Assembly over the same incident. However, subsequent reports indicate that his wife later distanced herself from the allegations, while Agbor has issued an apology.
