One Year of Purposeful Leadership: How Hon. Uche Okolo is Redefining Infrastructure in Awgu LGA

By Hon. Tochukwu Chukwu, Special Adviser on General Media & Publicity

Awgu Local Government Area has in the last one year witnessed a wave of infrastructural transformation under the purposeful leadership of the Executive Chairman, Hon. Uche Okolo. From his first day in office on October 2, 2024, Hon. Okolo made it clear that infrastructural development would be the backbone of his administration, a vision carefully aligned with Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s disruptive innovation and inclusive development agenda for Enugu State.

Recognizing that road networks and modern facilities are the lifelines of grassroots growth, Hon. Okolo has invested energy, resources, and foresight in projects that are not only reshaping Awgu’s physical landscape but also improving the quality of life for Ndi Awgu.

Roads that Connect Communities and Opportunities

At the heart of this infrastructural drive is the asphalting of the 1.5km Awgu–Ndeaboh Road (Awgu end), once described as a “death trap” but now a smooth, motorable stretch boosting mobility, trade, and safety.

Equally remarkable is the ongoing 4km Access Road to Agbogugu Smart Green School and Farm Green Estate, designed with double drainage systems and walkways. The project has been widely described as “mouthwatering” for its modern features that stand out in a rural setting.

Another landmark achievement is the 3.5km Awgu–Ugwueme Road project, flagged off by Hon. Okolo as part of his commitment to connecting communities with smart green schools. During the ceremony, he reaffirmed that the road was part of his resolve to complement Governor Mbah’s grassroots development agenda by opening up rural areas through reliable infrastructure.

Beyond these major projects, Hon. Okolo has embarked on the construction of all access roads leading to Awgu Smart Green Schools, ensuring that education and modern learning facilities are accessible to every child in the local government.

A Modern Secretariat for a Modern Government

Infrastructural development under Hon. Okolo is not limited to roads. The Awgu Local Government Secretariat today wears a new look, having been beautified and modernized into what many now describe as a “world-class administrative hub.” The Chairman’s office was reconstructed into a befitting, ICT-driven facility, providing a conducive environment for governance, accountability, and innovation.

These changes reflect not just physical upgrades but also Hon. Okolo’s visionary leadership—rooted in foresight, good planning, and a drive to elevate Awgu to national recognition.

Seasonal Maintenance and Grassroots Touch

Understanding the unique needs of his people, Hon. Okolo has also prioritized seasonal road maintenance, especially during festive seasons, to ensure that returning Ndi Awgu encounter safe access roads and smooth traffic flow. This gesture reflects his responsiveness to community needs and his deep connection to the cultural heartbeat of Awgu.

One Year, A Legacy of Growth

In just one year, Awgu has recorded unprecedented progress in infrastructural development. Roads that were once nightmares are now arteries of opportunity; secretariats once neglected now inspire confidence in governance; and smart green school projects now rest on solid infrastructural foundations.

Through courage, accountability, and people-centered vision, Hon. Uche Okolo has proven that local government is not too small a unit for big dreams and impactful governance. His legacy, even at this early stage, is clear: Awgu is rising, Awgu is glowing, and Awgu is working again.
