Ohaneze forbids its president from taking govt appointments, contracts

Pan-Igbo socio-political organisation, Ohaneze Ndigbo on Monday barred its president from accepting government appointments or receiving and contracts during their tenures in the association.

The organisation said that its resolution aligned with its amended bye-law. The new President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, FCT chapter, Nze Ifeanyichukwu Obasi-Nweze, announced this during a press conference held at the Abuja Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists.

He said the action to bar Ohaneze Ndigbo President from accepting government appointments or contract executions would start from himself.

“This is to increase the over 2000 employments secured for Ndigbo sons and daughters in the FCT and to hold the 2021 Igbo Day Celebration on Wednesday at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja,” he said.

Obasi-Nweze said that they were elected in accordance with the bye-laws of Ohaneze Ndigbo FCT chapter as amended 2019 and which has been declared valid by the court.

He said, “We wish to state that just as the administration of the erstwhile President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, conducted the election that produced the current President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo in the person of Ambassador George Obiaozor.

“The same way the outgoing administration of Odozie Nwodozi conducted the election which produced the incoming Executive Committee of the Ohaneze Ndigbo FCT with my humble self as the President and Leader of the Exco.”

According to him, one of the reasons for the delay in conducting the election was the High Court of FCT which restrained everybody from conducting the election of Ohaneze Ndigbo FCT, on November 27 2020, or any other day pending the hearing and final determination of the substantive Motion on Notice to determine the status and validity of the Byelaws of Ohanaeze Ndigbo FCT Chapter as Amended in 2019.

“As law-abiding citizens, we waited till the same court gave its final judgment which was later given to us to go ahead to conduct the elections that produced our executives”, he said.
