The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, has called on Governor Dapo Abiodun to rein in his Special Assistant on Student Affairs, Azeez Adeyemi, following the alleged assault and continued harassment of a journalist, Toheeb Olajide Osoba, publisher of Newsangle.
In a statement released on Monday and signed by NUJ Chairman Wale Olarenwaju and Secretary Bunmi Adigun, the Union condemned what it described as unprovoked harassment during the May Day celebration at the June 12 Cultural Center, Abeokuta. Osoba was allegedly beaten on the instructions of Adeyemi.
The NUJ further alleged that Adeyemi has since written two petitions, accusing Osoba of being a member of a cult group, and used security agents to intimidate and attempt arrest without prior invitation.
Describing the actions as “uncivilized, dangerous, and undemocratic,” the NUJ warned that any attack on journalists is a direct threat to press freedom. The Union stated that such conduct erodes public trust in governance and must be thoroughly investigated.
As part of its immediate response, the NUJ:
Declared Azeez Adeyemi and his faction of NANS persona non grata at the Iwe Iroyin Press Centre.
Announced a temporary media blackout on student-related coverage in the state pending the outcome of investigations.
Demanded an end to all forms of harassment, intimidation, and abuse of power by the governor’s aide and his associates.
The Union insisted it will not tolerate any attempt to gag the press or hinder journalists from carrying out their constitutional duties.
