Obidient Movement Finance Director Steps Down

A key support group that mobilized voters for Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential election, the Obidient Movement, has experienced a shake-up following the resignation of its Director of Finance, Dr. Peter Agada.

Agada announced his resignation on Wednesday during a press briefing in Abuja. At the same event, he introduced a new political platform called The Movement Nigeria.

While explaining why he stepped down, Agada pointed to what he described as poor organization and weak internal coordination within the Obidient Movement. According to him, the situation no longer matched his professional standards.

He revealed that he had submitted his resignation letter about three days earlier, informing the movement’s headquarters that he would no longer continue in the position. Agada also expressed surprise that, despite serving as Director of Finance, he was not informed about important activities taking place within the organization.

He emphasized that his decision was not based on personal issues. However, he noted that he had begun to feel disconnected from the movement’s operations.

Agada further clarified that his relationship with Obi was purely professional. He said that even though he worked within Obi’s campaign structure for more than a year, he had only met the former Labour Party presidential candidate in person twice.

Speaking about his newly launched platform, The Movement Nigeria, Agada said it would not revolve around individual political figures. He stressed that it is not designed for personalities such as Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Peter Obi, or Atiku Abubakar, but rather for Nigerians in general. He also explained that the platform’s funding would be decentralized, relying on collective contributions instead of a single major sponsor.

In response to the development, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, played down the significance of Agada’s exit, noting that the movement is already undergoing restructuring.

Tanko explained that plans are in place to shift from the current directorate system to a more inclusive collegiate structure, which is intended to address concerns about members feeling excluded.

He added that the movement is currently in a period of political realignment, making it normal for individuals to move between different platforms. Tanko also said he had not yet received any official resignation letter from Agada.

Despite the situation, he maintained that there is no internal crisis and insisted that the Obidient Movement remains united.
