The Nsukka Female Football Championship, an initiative of the Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Engr. Jude Chinedu Asogwa, KSJI, came to an exciting close on Sunday with Nkpunano Ward defeating Ibeku-Opi Ward 4–3 in a thrilling final. Obimo Ward secured third place after edging out Ede-Ukwu Ward 2–1.

The championship, which featured both male and female categories, was conceived by Engr. Asogwa as part of his Sports-for-Development agenda. The initiative seeks to harness hidden talents within Nsukka’s youth population, groom them into professional athletes, and ultimately establish official male and female teams representing the local government.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Engr. Asogwa reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment through sports and creativity, stressing that sports remain one of the strongest tools for talent discovery and global recognition. He disclosed that preparations are in their final stages to register Nsukka LGA FC in a recognized league, giving the area’s budding footballers a platform to showcase their skills on a larger stage.

Beyond football, Mayor Asogwa also pledged support for local creative talents. He singled out popular Nsukka-based skit maker, MC Shai, from the audience, promising to collaborate with him and other creatives in order to elevate local talents to the national and international spotlight.

Declaring the final match open, the Enugu State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Lloyd Ekweremmadu, commended the initiative and praised the brilliance displayed by the participating teams. He further announced that standout players from the tournament would be given the opportunity to feature in the Rangers International female team, aligning with the vision of the championship to serve as a talent pipeline.

The highlight of the closing ceremony was the presentation of the championship trophy to Nkpunano Ward, whose resilience and teamwork secured their victory in what many described as a pulsating encounter.

The Nsukka Female Football Championship has not only reignited sporting passion in the community but also positioned Nsukka as a hub for youth development, talent discovery, and grassroots sports promotion.
