Niger abducted pupils: Parents raise extra N23.2m

The children of Tanko Salihu Islamic School, Tegina, Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State, have spent 88 days in captivity.

A parent of one of the 134 children still in captivity said the parents were running around and begging people to support them to raise the extra ransom being demanded by the kidnappers in order to get the children out.

“We are now looking for N23.2m; N20m is the additional ransom, N3m is to purchase the six motorcycles demanded by the abductors and N200,000 to convey the motorcycles to their village,” the parent said.

The children were abducted by gunmen suspected to be bandits on May 30, 2021.

Some teachers and workers of the school were also abducted alongside 136 children.

Many of the workers after some weeks in captivity escaped along with two of the schoolchildren.

It was learnt that all the children were alive and healthy as one of the parents, who confided in correspondent, said some of the parents spoke to the children on Wednesday.

The parent said there was nothing positive up till now concerning the release of the children.

On the reported death of six of the children, the parent said it was not true, adding, “They are all alive and healthy. We spoke to them this morning (Wednesday).

“Out of the 136 children, only two escaped from their abductors; we still have 134 children with the abductors. Unfortunately, one of the two, who escaped, lost her memory and hasn’t regained it till now.”
